Desempenho agronômico da chia sob diferentes arranjos espaciais 196
Teodoro Maia, João Paulo; Garcia da Silva, Wellington; Vieira Silva, Ariana; Duarte Giunti, Otavio; Henrique Sartori, Raul Henrique.
The nutritional benefits and functional potential of chia seeds have been highlighted in the literature. However, few studies address the planting system of the species, especially its spatial arrangement. Thus, this study proposes to evaluate chia cultivation under different spatial arrangements, aiming at its agronomic performance. The experimental design was randomized in blocks in a 3×2 factorial scheme, with three inter-row spacings (0.30, 0.45, and 0.60 m), two plant densities per linear meter (7.5 and 15 plants m−1), and four replications. Plant height, stem diameter, leaf area index, dry matter, chlorophyll index, leaf nitrogen content, panicle size, harvest index, and yield were evaluated. The evaluated spatial arrangements did not influence plant...

Sagrilo,Edvaldo; Vidigal Filho,Pedro Soares; Pequeno,Manoel Genildo; Gonçalves-Vidigal,Maria Celeste; Kvitschal,Marcus Vinícius.
A study was carried out in Araruna County, State of Paraná, to understand the relationship between the total dry matter yield and its proportion allocated to the storage roots of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) plants in the second vegetative cycle. The experimental design was a randomized complete block in split-plot scheme with four replications. The plots consisted of the Mico, IAC 13 and IAC 14 cultivars and the monthly harvesting dates were assessed in the sub-plots. The results showed that the Mico and IAC 13 cultivars were more efficient in allocating dry matter to the storage roots. The IAC 14 cultivar allocated a higher proportion of assimilates to stems compared with the other two cultivars. With regard to the influence of harvesting time, the...

Dry matter production and partitioning of maize hybrids and dwarf unes at four plant populations Ciência Rural
Sangoi,Luis; Salvador,Ricardo.
This experiment was conducted in Ames, Iowa, USA, to compare dry matter accumulation patterns of maize genotypes contrasting in height and leafiness, and to test whether reduction in plant height an leaf number through the use of dwarfing genes or earliness can improve grain dry matter allocation. Five plant genotypes were tested: a full season hybrid adapted to central lowa (NK 4525), a short season hybrid adapted to northern Minnesota (C1070), and three dwarf lines (156-A, 302-E and I17- A). The dwarves contained, respectively, the homozygous, independent, recessive dwarfing genes d3, d1 and br2. Each genotype was sown at four plant populations: 25, 50, 75 and 100.000 plants. ha-1. Hybrids had the greatest rates of decrease in total biomass and grain dry...

Fifty years of wheat breeding in Southern Brazil: yield improvement and associated changes PAB
Rodrigues,Osmar; Lhamby,Julio César Barreneche; Didonet,Agostinho Dirceu; Marchese,José Abramo.
The objective of this study was to assess the impact of genetic breeding on grain yield, and to identify the physiological traits associated to the increment in yield and their related growth processes, for wheat cultivars grown in Southern Brazil, in the past five decades. Seven wheat cultivars released between 1940 and 1992, were compared for physiological aspects associated with grain yield. Grain yield, biological yield, biomass partitioning, harvest index and grain yield components were also determined. The number of grains per square meter was more affected by plant breeding and was better correlated with grain yield (r = 0.94, p<0.01) than with grain weight (r = -0.39ns). The higher number of grains per square meter was better correlated with the...

Growth and yield of common bean cultivars at two soil phosphorus levels under biological nitrogen fixation PAB
ARAÚJO,ADELSON PAULO; TEIXEIRA,MARCELO GRANDI; ALMEIDA,DEJAIR LOPES DE.
The genotypic differences on growth and yield of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in response to P supply were evaluated in a field experiment under biological N2 fixation. Eight cultivars were grown at two levels of applied P (12 and 50 kg ha-1 of P -- P1 and P2 respectively), in randomized block design in factorial arrangement. Vegetative biomass was sampled at three ontogenetic stages. The effects of genotype and phosphorus were significant for most traits, but not the genotype ´ phosphorus interaction. The cultivars presented different patterns of biomass production and nutrient accumulation, particularly on root system. At P1, P accumulation persisted after the beginning of pod filling, and P translocation from roots to shoots was lower. The nodule...

Leaf gas exchange and yield of three upland rice cultivars Bragantia
Alvarez,Rita de Cássia Félix; Habermann,Gustavo; Crusciol,Carlos Alexandre Costa; Nascente,Adriano Stephan; Rodrigues,João Domingos.
Studies of physiological parameters associated with crop performance and growth in different groups of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) may support plant breeding programs. We evaluated the role of gas exchange rates and dry matter accumulation (DMA) as traits responsible for yields in a traditional (cv. ‘Caiapó’), intermediate (cv. ‘Primavera’) and modern (cv. ‘Maravilha’) upland rice cultivars. Leaf gas exchange rates, DMA, leaf area index (LAI), harvest indexes (HI) and yield components were measured on these genotypes in the field, under sprinkler irrigation. Panicles per m2 and DMA at flowering (FL) and heading, as well as CO2 assimilation rates (A) were similar across these cultivars. The highest yield was found in ‘Primavera’, which may be explained by...

Leaf senescence of common bean plants as affected by soil phosphorus supply Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Araújo,Adelson Paulo; Kubota,Flavio Yuudi; Teixeira,Marcelo Grandi.
Responses of leaf senescence to P supply could constitute adaptive mechanisms for plant growth under P-limiting conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of soil P supply on leaf senescence of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Eight P levels, ranging from 5 to 640 mg kg-1 P, were applied to pots containing four bean plants of cultivar Carioca in 10 kg of an Oxic Haplustult soil. Attached leaves were counted weekly, abscised leaves were collected every other day, and seeds were harvested at maturity. The number of live leaves increased until 48 days after emergence (DAE) and decreased afterwards, irrespective of applied P levels. At lower applied P levels, the initial increase and the final decrease of leaf number was weak, whereas at...

Productívíty of cassava and other crops in an intercropping system Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Silva,Daniel V; Ferreira,Evander A; Oliveira,Maxwel C; Pereira,Gustavo A. M; Braga,Renan R; dos Santos,José B; Aspiazu,Ignácio; Souza,Matheus F.
Intercropping is a common practice among farmers in tropical regions of the world and has persisted for years, not only for traditional reasons, but also for certain advantages that helped in its ecological adaptation. In regard to low income farmers with small areas for cultivation, more attention should be given to the cost of production and better land management. Thus, the aim of this work was to determine the best intercropping system of cassava with other crops. The experiment was conducted in an area belonging to the cassava (Manihot esculenta) producers of the Planalto de Minas district in Diamantina, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The treatments comprised cassava intercropped with maize, beans and dwarf pigeon pea, as well as controls with and...

Relation between Seed Appearance and Phenolic Maturity: A Case Study Using Grapes cv. Carménère Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Fredes,Claudio; Von Bennewitz,Eduardo; Holzapfel,Eduardo; Saavedra,Felipe.
Sensory evaluation of grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) plays a key role in determining the harvest time in grapevine varieties. The harvest time of cv. Carménère is one of the latest of Chile. During the season 2007-2008, the evolution of the appearance of ‘Carménère’ seeds was evaluated as a harvest criterion, comparing it with the chemical and phenolic ripening. The samples were obtained from an organic vineyard located in Curicó Valley, Chile. Starting at 16 ºBrix, 100 seed berries samples were collected weekly from medium vigor vines in order to register photographically the ventral and dorsal sides of each seed. In addition to the seed tannins percentage, the extractable anthocyanins, total anthocyanins and total polyphenols index, as well as the titratable...
